Body image and societal beauty standards have taken greater heights as we are bombarded by social media, idealizing bodies to meet societal standards.

This factor affects anyone and one of them is the Pop-artist Camilla Cabello who is speaking out about how society views women’s bodies- opening up about her ‘struggles’ and ‘insecurities’.

Camilla Cabello has never been new to body-shaming comments people throw at her online after her series of previous photos went circulating. But despite being the subject of social media posts regarding her “body”, the Señorita singer admits her constant battle with her insecurities and struggles after being photographed wearing a bikini during her beach break in Miami.

On April 2, the singer-songwriter shared in her Instagram and Twitter account a lengthy message to discuss how she has been repeatedly experiencing unpleasant scenarios with paparazzi- being photographed while wearing her swimsuit that has always left her feeling “super-vulnerable and unprepared” while being regularly “papped” and pursued by cameras.

“Every time I’ve gone to this beach club in Miami, I get papped—somehow when I check in pans no and get me in my bikini, and every time I’ve felt super vulnerable and unprepared—I’ve worn bikinis that were so too small and paid no mind to how I looked, then saw pictures online and comments and been so upset” Camila wrote.

The former Fifth Harmony member also shared “I reminded myself when it impacted my self-esteem, that I was thinking the culture’s thoughts and not my own. A culture that has gotten so used to an image of what a ‘healthy’ woman’s body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women.”

Seeing her pictures online blasted with comments about her, the singer also noted that she “didn’t eat anything too heavy” prior to her brief beach vacay and even got her new bikini, especially for her trip, “put her lip gloss” for she knew that her ocean outing will surely be a ‘whole photo shoot’.

The singer also shared how she “held her core so tight her abs hurt and didn’t breathe while barely smiling,” explaining how self-conscious she was because the paparazzi with their camera was there the whole time that she couldn’t get to relax and do what she was meant to do.

While sharing her painful experience with the paparazzi, Camilla emphasizes the “feeling of having always gone into nature as she witnessed “a group of toddlers giggling with excitement at waves knocking them over with no sunglasses, no jewelry, no self-consciousness, just the innocence of the children,” which happened to go opposite because of the cameras following her.

Talking about her experience and wanting to speak for women, Camila then said how she felt the emptiness and sadness of our culture’s thoughts that became her thoughts- wanting to talk about her experiences “because we see pictures of women and praise them for looking good, for looking fit or ‘healthy’” then later highlights the relevance of health if someone is “so fixated on what body looks like that the mental health suffers that one can’t enjoy life” and added that she knows what she looks like doesn’t determine how healthy, happy, or sexy she is.

Concluding her post, the songstress revealed how the comments of people have been staying loud in her head and are affecting her emotionally and that “ironically, all the therapy, all the inner work is to try and get back to feeling like a seven-year-old me on the beach. I’m mourning her today. Happy, silly, breathing, pretending to be a mermaid, FREE.”

Being one of the sought-after singers and actresses, Camila Cabello is no stranger to sharing her experiences and her constant battle with her insecurities brought by the judgments against her.

Upon sharing her open letter filled with her struggles, together with an empowering message for everyone, the singer’s vulnerable post received a flood of support thanking her for speaking about what the “world needed to hear”.
